What to Wear and Bring to an Open-Air Festival in Amman

Amman summer evenings are warm but breezy once the sun’s down, and Balsam Grounds is an outdoor venue with a mix of lawn, paved areas, and gravel paths. Dress for comfort and you’ll have a much better night.

What to wear

Clothes: Light, breathable fabrics for when you arrive; bring a layer for midnight. August evenings in Amman can feel warm until 22:00 and then drop noticeably — especially if there’s a breeze. A light denim jacket or linen shirt over your outfit works perfectly.

Shoes: Comfortable is non-negotiable. You’ll be standing for a couple of hours during the headline set. Trainers or flat sandals work well; heels on outdoor ground are a regrettable choice.

Sunglasses: If you arrive in the afternoon on Friday or Saturday (doors from 14:00 and 12:00), the afternoon sun is still strong.

What to bring

• Power bank — you’ll film, you’ll photograph, your phone will die without it
• Cash and/or card — your ticket includes one free drink; everything else is purchased separately
• Light bag — a small crossbody or backpack is ideal; anything bigger gets inconvenient in a crowd
• Your ticket — printed or on your phone; 5 JOD gets you in with one free drink

What to leave at home

• Large bags and backpacks — impractical and may be checked at the entrance
• Anything fragile — outdoor festivals and valuables don’t mix
• The attitude that you’ll “just wing it” on Saturday night — plan your arrival time

Photo tips

The festival is genuinely photogenic. Golden-hour shots before sunset, string-light portraits after dark, and the crowd during Cairokee are the three best opportunities. Get there early on Saturday if photography matters to you — the lawn at dusk, before it fills up, is the shot.
